Thus, my acknowledgement to you all.
Since becoming a mama, I've taken the opportunity to develop therapeutic services for unmet needs in the community. I've lived and worked in Aotearoa New Zealand since 2017, as a New Zealand Registered Occupational Therapist, across school, community and hospital settings.
I am passionate about helping tamariki, rangatahi and their whānau to live fulfilling lives and participate in the activities that bring them joy and wellness. This is achieved through coaching, skill-building, and linking in with the right resources. I consider it essential that therapy is whānau-centred and responsive to context: be that one-to-one sessions in your home or education setting; group classes or workshops; telehealth or in-person brainstorms.
Through a wide variety of professional and life experiences, I have built therapeutic skills across occupational areas such as:
specialist services in schools - adapting the curriculum for learners with Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Global Developmental Delay; ensuring safe travel in vehicles; supporting access for complex physical and/or complex behavioural needs through fine & gross motor activities, sensory programs, hydrotherapy, ergonomics and switch-adapted technology
community-based and in-hospital therapy for neurological, sensory and physical barriers to daily activities, including upper limb function, functional cognition and visual perceptual assessment and intervention
identifying and linking families in with relevant funding and supports, and training the teams working with them - advocating with reports and meetings
managing teams of therapists, families and therapy assistants to deliver programs and rehab in the community, most recently as National Manager for Better Days, an injury rehabilitation company based in Auckland, New Zealand
conducting, publishing and presenting academic research on barriers to daily life faced by people from refugee backgrounds: https://doi.org/10.1177/1539449216668648; https://doi.org/10.1080/14427591.2020.1754279; Occupational Therapy Australia conference, Perth, 2017
teaching English as a second language locally and internationally, alongside accreditation in Community Development work
My practice is informed and refined by the latest research and strategies for promoting children's and young people's development.
